January 2012

Photo MISSION: Provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

VISION:
That all children achieve success in life.

Updates from BBBS

January, February and March have been very busy and productive months for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area. We continue to move our Mission forward by serving over 200 children in Danville and Pittsylvania County. We still have children ready to be matched on our waiting list, and are actively seeking Big volunteers. At this time, the majority of the children waiting are young men. If you are a man at least 18 years old, who has been considering becoming a Big, now is the time. The children need you!

As always, we want to express our deep gratitude to our Bigs who are changing the lives of the youth in our community. Thank you to our staff, ever diligent in insuring match sustainability and the safety of our children. Our average match lasts five years!  This is far longer than the national average. We also want to recognize our fine Board of Directors who guides us on our journey with passion and enthusiasm for our cause.

Thank you, Danville and Pittsylvania County!  Thank you Bigs!  Thank you Sponsors and Donators!  Thank you Teams!

Thank you Jr. Wednesday Club for Partnering with us!
Thank you Riverside Lanes for hosting the event!
Thank you GW Athletes for volunteering!
Thank you to everyone who supported Bowl For Kids' Sake!

PhotoBig Brothers Big Sisters major fundraiser, Bowl For Kids' Sake, on March 24 was a huge success, raising almost $35,000 of our $45,000 goal. Why do we need to raise so much money if we are a volunteer organization?  It costs more than $800 a year to sustain one mentoring match. All the money raised stays in our community to support our Big/Little matches. If you were unable to attend, you can still participate by making a donation.  Go to www.biglittledanville.org  for an online donation or send your check payable to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area to 308 Craghead St, Suite 104, Danville 24541. Do it today and help a child!  For questions, call Melanie Vaughan, 434-710-2754

News from Bigs

Photo

Big Kelvin Perry:
"We are having a blast. We have dinner at least twice a month and we have an ongoing one on one basketball challenge. My little is now BIG (That is what a growth spurt will do for you) so we plan to exercise together and he want to learn how to swim. We have had great 'talk time' and we plan to take a train for a day trip to Washington DC. Interesting my little looks at the news and is knowledgeable of current events. When we went to Wendy's the last time, he told me about 'Pink Slime;' asked how did he know, he said he saw it while watching the news. More importantly we talked the Trayvonn Martin case and shared on how he felt about the entire matter. Great dialogue."

Big TiJuana Harris:
PhotoScience Project
"Last month, I helped my little Quinasia Hairston to complete a science project. We conducted an experiment to test the “wet strength” of three different brands of paper towels (Brawny, Bounty, and Sparkle). For our experiment, we measured the number of quarters that a wet paper towel could hold before tearing. Quinasia assumed that Bounty was the strongest brand of paper towels because it was the most expensive. PhotoHer hypothesis was proven correct as Bounty held more quarters than Brawny and Sparkle."

Easter Egg Hunt
"On Friday, April 6, 2012, Quinasia and I participated in a Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt at Coates Recreation Center. We had a lot of fun as neither one of us had ever searched for eggs in the dark before."
